Happy Mother’s Day Weekend

Mothers are perhaps the most influential person in our lives. They’ve raised us to the best of their ability with unconditional love and always wanting us to achieve our goals and be happy. Mothers are the real-life superheroes of the day because they’re not just moms, they’re party planners, nurses, accountants, engineers and chauffeurs – and I don’t mean that figuratively either! Moms wear many hats on a daily basis – I guess you could say there’s a little Wonder Woman inside of every mother. And even though they ought to be individually celebrated every day, this Sunday May 13th we all celebrate the most powerful gift that nature has given us: motherhood.

Pre-Baby

Moms put so much work and energy into their kids and it starts before they are even born. The toll pregnancy takes on a mother’s body can be significant. Many mothers-to-be see their chiropractor regularly -- and for good reason. During pregnancy, the additional weight of the baby, the placenta, and all that extra fluid can really throw off a mom’s center of gravity. This leads to aching hips and aching backs along with the traditional pregnancy symptoms of nausea, morning sickness, and headaches -- which is what makes chiropractic care during pregnancy so important. Chiropractors know the side effects of pregnancy aren’t just something pregnant women should grit their teeth at and “just deal with” for the next nine to 10 months. With the help of chiropractic care, expectant moms can get help balancing their body. Misalignments in the spine can wreak all kinds of havoc, especially in a pregnant body. When the pelvis is properly aligned in pregnancy it can make pregnancy less uncomfortable and help the birthing process to go a bit easier. Seeing a chiropractor after pregnancy is also really important. As your ligaments and joints tighten back up, they may need a little help to settle back in where they belong! And let’s face it, after giving birth we could really use some help getting things to go back where they belong.

Post-Baby

Once a baby is here, moms have to work pretty hard. After all, it’s up to her to keep that helpless little baby alive. Let me say that again slowly and see if it doesn’t clutch your heart a little more tightly: Keep … that … helpless … little baby … alive. The feeding, the diapering, and the sleep deprivation – it’s can be tough. I’m convinced that being tired due to a newborn baby belongs in a different class of tiredness all its own. There’s tired and then there’s newborn baby tired. Moms reading this know what we’re talking about.

Being a mom is stressful. First, it’s the stress of having a newborn, then it’s the stress of having a toddler with an attitude and no self-control or a sense of self-preservation. Next, it morphs into caring and supporting your child as they grow and find out who they are in this life. All of that requires time and effort. Don’t get me wrong, it’s time well spent, but the demands can leave a mom feeling like she’s just been hit by a truck of tiredness. This is another way chiropractic care can be helpful to moms everywhere -- by helping them to not feel as if they are in a constant state of stress and upheaval. Chiropractic care can help to snap your body out of a cycle of chronic stress that could eventually lead to health problems such as:

  • Diabetes

  • Obesity

  • Heart disease

  • High blood pressure

As a mother you need to be at your best to raise the humans you helped to create -- and chiropractic care can help you to juggle it all. Plus, every time you can invest in something for yourself and only for yourself, that is a check in the win column of motherhood. Seeing your chiropractor regularly is definitely “me” time every mom needs.

We think this Mother’s Day you should make a commitment to yourself as a mother to invest more in yourself and make chiropractic care a part of that promise. Take care of yourself so you can continue to be the superwoman in your kids’ lives. Oh, and happy Mother’s Day – in case no one has said it lately, you’re doing a great job.
